Netflix Announces Price Increase for UK Subscribers

Netflix has announced a price increase for its subscription plans in the UK, marking the first hike since October 2023. The Standard plan, the platform’s most popular tier, will now cost £12.99 per month, a £2 increase. The Premium plan has risen by £1 to £18.99, while the ad-supported Standard plan has also increased by £1 to £5.99. Additionally, the cost of adding an extra member to a subscription has gone up by £1 across all plans.

A Netflix spokesperson stated that the price adjustments are necessary to “continue to invest in programming and deliver more value for our members.” The changes apply to both new and existing customers, with notifications being sent out based on billing cycles. The company has also discontinued its Basic subscription tier, pushing more users towards its ad-supported option.

This move follows similar price increases in the US, Canada, Argentina, and Portugal last month. Netflix’s decision comes amid significant investments in live sports and original programming, including a $500 million-per-year deal with WWE and expanded sports coverage, such as NFL games and high-profile boxing matches. The streaming giant reported record global subscriber numbers at the end of 2024, surpassing expectations with nearly 19 million new signups in the final months of the year.

Analysts have noted that while price hikes are becoming common across the streaming industry, Netflix must be cautious to avoid reaching a point where consumers become frustrated with frequent increases. Other platforms, including Disney+, Spotify, and Paramount+, have also raised their prices in 2024.
