Ryanair Passenger Charged £50 for Water Bottle in Baggage Policy Dispute
A Ryanair passenger was charged £50 for carrying a water bottle onboard after the airline deemed it a violation of its baggage policy. Ruby Flanagan, who was flying from Dublin to Stansted on 4 February, was stopped at the gate before boarding her return flight to London. She had a 750ml water bottle strapped across her body, which gate staff insisted must be placed inside her small personal bag. Despite complying, her bag was then deemed too large, and she was told she would have to pay €60 (£50) to board the flight.
Ms Flanagan, who had not faced this issue on her outbound flight, expressed confusion as other passengers carried items like laptops and travel pillows without issue. To avoid missing her flight, she paid the fee, which was double the cost of the water bottle itself. Ryanair stated that her Basic Fare ticket only permitted one small personal bag, and the water bottle was considered an additional item, necessitating the charge.
The airline’s policy allows passengers to bring one small bag (40 x 20 x 25cm) for free, with additional cabin baggage fees ranging from €20 to €60. Travel expert Simon Calder noted that while the charge may seem disproportionate, Ryanair was within its rights to enforce the policy. Ms Flanagan has since filed a complaint with the airline, questioning the consistency of the rule’s application.
