UK Video Doorbell Owners Warned Over GDPR Compliance

Video doorbell owners in the UK are being warned to ensure their devices comply with privacy laws or face fines of up to £100,000. Experts have highlighted that one in five households now use video doorbells, which allow users to monitor their property remotely via smartphones. However, failure to adhere to General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules could result in significant penalties.

Max Royston, a director at Gaffsy, emphasised that CCTV systems, including video doorbells, must be GDPR-compliant if they capture footage beyond the property boundary, such as neighbouring gardens, shared spaces, or public areas. Non-compliance could lead to action by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), with fines of up to £100,000 for individuals and £17.5 million for businesses. Affected individuals may also pursue legal action.

Royston stressed the importance of proper data storage, ensuring footage is accurate and used solely for property protection. He advised that footage captured beyond property boundaries should only be retained for a necessary period before deletion. Additionally, homeowners must comply with deletion requests from neighbours or others captured on camera.

To avoid disputes or fines, Royston recommended informing neighbours about the system, displaying notices about recording, and considering alternatives like additional lighting or fencing. Privacy filters can also help minimise unnecessary filming of neighbouring properties.

The rise in video doorbell usage has sparked concerns over privacy rights, with social media often showcasing footage of package thefts or doorstep disputes. However, homeowners must remain vigilant about their responsibilities under GDPR to avoid legal and financial repercussions.
