Wolverhampton Wanderers Triumph Over Blackburn Rovers in FA Cup Clash
Wolverhampton Wanderers secured their place in the FA Cup fifth round with a 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. The Premier League side avoided an upset thanks to quick-fire goals from João Gomes and Matheus Cunha just past the half-hour mark.
Blackburn started brightly and thought they had taken the lead in the 19th minute when Dom Hyam headed home, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Wolves capitalised on the let-off, with Gomes’ shot deflecting off goalkeeper Balazs Toth and into the net in the 31st minute. Moments later, Cunha doubled the lead with a composed finish into the far corner after being set up by Nelson Semedo.
Cunha, who recently signed a new contract with Wolves, had further chances to extend the lead but was denied by Toth on multiple occasions. Blackburn struggled to mount a comeback, with Todd Cantwell and Emmanuel Dennis missing opportunities to reduce the deficit. Wolves’ defence held firm, and the visitors comfortably saw out the game to progress to the next round.
The result leaves Blackburn manager John Eustace under increased scrutiny, with speculation linking him to a return to former club Derby County. Meanwhile, Wolves’ victory provides a boost as they continue their campaign in both the FA Cup and Premier League.
