Amazon MGM Studios Takes Creative Control of James Bond Franchise
Amazon MGM Studios has taken creative control of the James Bond franchise, marking a significant shift in the 60-year-old series. Long-time producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who have overseen the franchise since the 1990s, have agreed to step back from their roles, allowing Amazon to lead the future of 007. The duo will retain co-ownership of the franchise but will no longer be involved in its creative direction.
Wilson, 87, announced his retirement from producing Bond films, stating he will focus on art and charitable projects. Broccoli, 64, expressed her intention to pursue other ventures, reflecting on her decades-long dedication to maintaining the legacy of the franchise established by her father, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli. Both emphasised their trust in Amazon MGM Studios to guide the franchise forward.
The move follows Amazon’s acquisition of MGM in 2021 for $8.5 billion, which granted the company distribution rights to the Bond films. However, until now, Amazon had limited creative influence. The decision to hand over creative control has sparked mixed reactions, with some fans expressing concern over the franchise’s future direction under Amazon’s leadership.
Daniel Craig, who played Bond in five films, including his final appearance in No Time to Die (2021), praised Wilson and Broccoli, calling their contributions to the franchise “spectacular.” He wished Wilson a well-deserved retirement and expressed hope to collaborate with Broccoli on future projects.
The announcement comes amid ongoing speculation about the next Bond film, with no confirmed script or casting decisions yet. Actors such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Idris Elba have been rumoured as potential successors to Craig, but no official announcements have been made. With Amazon now at the helm, the future of the iconic spy series remains uncertain but poised for a new era.
