Bayern Munich Clinches Dramatic Victory Over Celtic in Champions League
Bayern Munich secured a dramatic late victory over Celtic in the Champions League knockout play-off, advancing to the last-16 with a 3-2 aggregate win. The match, held at the Allianz Arena, ended 1-1 on the night, but Alphonso Davies’ stoppage-time goal proved decisive for the German side.
Celtic, trailing 2-1 from the first leg, put in a spirited performance and took the lead through Nicolas Kuhn in the second half. The Scottish champions created numerous chances and looked set to force extra time. However, Davies, a substitute, scored in the 94th minute after Kasper Schmeichel saved Leon Goretzka’s header, only for the rebound to fall to the Canadian, who tapped it in.
Celtic captain Callum McGregor described the result as “one of the cruellest” in his career, praising his team’s effort and resilience. Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill also commended the visitors, stating they “deserved more” and were “magnificent” throughout the match. Despite the heartbreak, Celtic’s performance earned widespread acclaim, with McGregor expressing pride in his team’s display against a “really good Bayern side.”
Bayern, though not at their best, showed composure under pressure to secure progression. The result extends Celtic’s poor record against German teams in European competition, with just two wins in their last 19 encounters. The Hoops now exit the Champions League, while Bayern march on to the next round.
