BT Email Outage Leaves Thousands Frustrated Across the UK

Thousands of BT customers across the UK were left unable to access their emails on Saturday, 15 February, following a widespread outage. Reports began flooding in from around 5am, with more than 4,600 complaints logged on Downdetector, a website that tracks service disruptions. Over 90% of the issues were related to email access, while a smaller percentage reported broadband connectivity problems.

Customers took to social media to express their frustration, with many unable to send or receive emails via webmail or the BT app. One user wrote, “Oh, for heaven’s sake! What on EARTH is happening to BT’s email service?” while another questioned, “BT, your email servers are down and there is no response on your chat. What is going on?”

A BT spokesperson confirmed the issue, stating, “We’re aware that some BT email customers are unable to access their email on webmail and via the app. We’re investigating the cause of this and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.” The company advised affected customers to switch off Wi-Fi and use mobile data as a temporary workaround, clarifying that no other BT services were impacted.

By the afternoon, BT announced that the issue had been resolved, apologising again for the disruption. The outage comes amid broader concerns over service reliability, as BT recently announced price increases for mobile and broadband customers, set to take effect from March. The company, which also owns EE and Plusnet, attributed the hikes to rising operational costs and the need to invest in network improvements.
