BT Email Outage Leaves Thousands of UK Customers Frustrated
Thousands of BT customers across the UK were left unable to access their emails following a widespread outage that began early on Saturday morning. Reports of the issue started flooding in shortly after 5am, with more than 5,000 complaints logged on Downdetector, a website that tracks service disruptions. The majority of users experienced difficulties accessing their emails via webmail and the BT app, while a smaller percentage reported issues with their broadband connections.
Frustrated customers took to social media to voice their concerns, with many criticising BT for failing to provide timely updates on the situation. One user tweeted, “BT UK, your email servers are down, and the papers are covering it. Yet no update from BT—no admission, no ETA for a fix.” Another complained, “I can see the email server is down but nothing on your site to let us know there are issues.”
A BT spokesperson acknowledged the problem, stating, “We’re aware that some BT email customers are unable to access their email on webmail and via the app. We’re investigating the cause of this and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.” The company suggested a temporary workaround, advising customers to switch off Wi-Fi and use mobile data to access their emails. They confirmed that no other BT services were affected.
The outage comes as BT prepares to implement price increases for mobile and broadband services, with tariffs set to rise by up to £3 a month from March. The increases will apply to contracts initiated after April 10, 2023. Customers experiencing issues were encouraged to contact BT’s support team via phone, live chat, or the company’s website.
