Celtic's Premiership Setback; Hibernian Secures 2-1 Victory at Easter Road

Celtic suffered a rare Scottish Premiership defeat as they were beaten 2-1 by Hibernian at Easter Road, missing the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table. The loss came just days after their heartbreaking Champions League exit, where Bayern Munich scored a late equaliser to deny them a historic victory.

Hibs took control early in the game, with Josh Campbell scoring twice in the first half. His first goal came within two minutes, and he added a second just before halftime, capitalising on a defensive lapse. Celtic, who had been dominant in recent league matches, struggled to find their rhythm in the opening 45 minutes.

The visitors improved after the break, with Daizen Maeda pulling a goal back early in the second half. Maeda thought he had equalised later in the game, but his effort was ruled out by VAR after Alistair Johnston was adjudged to have let the ball go out of play before crossing. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was incensed by the decision, accusing VAR of “guesswork” and demanding clearer evidence.

Despite their efforts, Celtic couldn’t find a second goal, and Hibs held on for a crucial victory. The win extends Hibs’ unbeaten run to 13 games in all competitions and moves them up to fourth in the league. For Celtic, the defeat is a setback in their quest for a record-equalling 55th Scottish Premiership title, though they remain 13 points clear at the top.

Hibs manager David Gray praised his team’s resilience, particularly in the face of Celtic’s late pressure. Meanwhile, Rodgers lamented the VAR decision but acknowledged his side’s need to bounce back quickly as they turn their focus to domestic duties for the remainder of the season.
