The luxury London hotel and restaurant Chiltern Firehouse, a celebrity hotspot in Marylebone, was evacuated on Friday afternoon after a devastating fire broke out, forcing around 100 guests and staff to flee. The blaze, which started in ducting on the ground floor, quickly spread to the second and third floors and the roof, causing significant damage to the Grade II-listed building. Approximately 125 firefighters and 20 fire engines from across London were deployed to tackle the flames, which raged for over six hours before being brought under control.
André Balazs, the owner of Chiltern Firehouse, confirmed that no injuries were reported and praised the efforts of the firefighters, many of whom had a personal connection to the historic building, which was once a fire station. He expressed gratitude for their rapid response, noting that one firefighter had even been stationed there 30 years ago. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the venue will remain closed indefinitely for repairs.
Eyewitnesses described thick smoke billowing from the building, with flames visible at the roof. Guy Fischman, a passerby, recounted seeing “embers” and an “orange glow” from the top of the hotel, while others noted the dramatic scene of glamorous diners shivering outside in the cold. The fire has left the iconic venue, frequented by A-listers such as Madonna, Tom Cruise, and Kate Moss, in need of extensive refurbishment. The incident has also disrupted plans for the venue to host a Netflix party for the Bafta awards ceremony.
