Delta Air Lines Flight Crash-Lands at Toronto Pearson International Airport
A Delta Air Lines flight carrying 80 people crash-landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, 17 February 2025, flipping upside down and injuring at least 18 passengers. The Bombardier CRJ-900 jet, operated by Delta subsidiary Endeavor Air, was arriving from Minneapolis, Minnesota, when the incident occurred at approximately 3:30 pm local time. Despite the dramatic crash, there were no fatalities, and all passengers and crew were successfully evacuated.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, with 17 passengers initially transported to local hospitals for treatment. Later updates confirmed an 18th passenger was also hospitalised. Among the injured, three individuals—a child, a man in his 60s, and a woman in her 40s—were reported to be in critical condition and airlifted to trauma centres. The remaining injuries were described as minor.
Deborah Flint, CEO of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, praised the emergency teams for their swift and effective response, stating that the outcome was a result of their “heroic work.” She also confirmed that the crash did not involve any other aircraft.
The incident occurred amid challenging weather conditions, with Toronto experiencing heavy snowfall and strong winds following back-to-back winter storms. However, authorities noted that the runway was dry and there were no crosswinds at the time of the crash. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) and the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched investigations to determine the cause of the accident.
Passengers on board the flight described a chaotic but controlled evacuation. John Nelson, a passenger, shared a video on social media showing the overturned plane and stated, “Most people appear to be OK.” The airport temporarily suspended operations following the crash but resumed flights later in the evening, though delays were expected.
This incident marks the fourth aviation accident in North America in less than a month, raising concerns about safety in the region’s aviation sector. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with authorities urging against speculation until more information is gathered.
