Julian Holloway, Renowned British Actor of *Carry On* Fame, Passes Away at 80
Julian Holloway, the British actor best known for his roles in the Carry On film series, has died at the age of 80. Holloway passed away on Sunday at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in Dorset following a brief illness, according to his theatrical agency, Sharkey and Co.
Holloway appeared in several Carry On films, including Carry On Doctor, Carry On Up The Khyber, Carry On At Your Convenience, Carry On Henry, and Carry On Camping. His career spanned nearly five decades, with notable roles in television series such as Doctor Who and Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads?, as well as films like Porridge and The Rum Diary.
Born into showbusiness royalty on 24 June 1944 in Watlington, Oxfordshire, Holloway was the son of actor and comedian Stanley Holloway and actress Violet Lane. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and began his career in 1961. In his later years, he moved to California, where he became a successful voice actor, contributing to projects such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars and James Bond Jr.
Holloway is survived by his daughter, Sophie Dahl, a former supermodel and author, whom he had with British actress Tessa Dahl, daughter of renowned children’s author Roald Dahl. Tributes have poured in from colleagues and friends, including actress Sarah Douglas, who described him as “the wittiest of men” and a loyal friend.
Holloway’s final performance was as Prime Minister Almec in a 2020 episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. His legacy as a versatile actor, equally adept at comedy and drama, will be remembered by fans and peers alike.
