Legendary Jam Drummer Rick Buckler Passes Away at 69
Rick Buckler, the legendary drummer of The Jam, has passed away at the age of 69. The news was confirmed by his former bandmates, Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton, who shared heartfelt tributes on social media. Buckler died peacefully on Monday evening in Woking after a short illness, with his family by his side.
Weller reminisced about their early days, recalling rehearsals in his bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking, and their journey from playing in local pubs and clubs to achieving global success. He described their work as something that “stands the test of time” and expressed his deepest sympathy to Buckler’s family and friends. Foxton, meanwhile, praised Buckler as a “good guy and a great drummer,” highlighting his innovative drum patterns that helped shape The Jam’s iconic sound.
Buckler’s management also released a statement, describing him as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a devoted friend to many. They requested privacy for the family during this difficult time and promised to share further details about how fans can pay their respects.
The drummer had recently been forced to cancel a spoken word tour due to ongoing health issues. His team announced the cancellation on February 1, explaining that Buckler needed time to rest and recover. Despite his health struggles, Buckler remained passionate about connecting with fans and had been excited to bring his updated “in conversation” show to new audiences.
Born in Woking, Buckler formed The Jam in 1972 alongside Weller and Foxton. The band achieved 18 consecutive UK Top 40 singles, including four number-one hits, before disbanding in 1982. Following the split, Buckler pursued various ventures, including furniture design, writing, and music production. He returned to the stage in 2005 with a new band, The Gift, and later toured with Foxton as part of From the Jam. However, he stepped away from the project in 2009, feeling it risked becoming a tribute act without Weller.
Buckler is survived by his wife, Lesley, and their two children, Jason and Holly. His legacy as a pioneering drummer and a key figure in British music history remains firmly intact.
