Liverpool Clinches Narrow Victory Over Wolves to Extend Premier League Lead
Liverpool secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, restoring their seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League. Despite a nervy finish, the Reds held on to claim three crucial points in their pursuit of the title.
The hosts took an early lead in the 15th minute when Luis Diaz capitalised on a deflected pass from Mohamed Salah, bundling the ball over the line to end his 10-game goal drought. Salah then doubled Liverpool’s advantage just before half-time, converting a penalty after Diaz was fouled by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.
Wolves, however, refused to go down without a fight. Matheus Cunha reignited their hopes in the 67th minute with a stunning curling effort, setting up a tense finale. The visitors pushed hard for an equaliser, with debutant Marshall Munetsi forcing a crucial save from Alisson and Joao Gomes firing over from a promising position. A late interception by Jarell Quansah denied Wolves a clear chance to level the score, ensuring Liverpool held on for the win.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot acknowledged the mental toll of the match, praising his team’s resilience. “It was mentally difficult in the second half,” he said. “We had to show a different mentality, and we did. In a season where you want to achieve something, you have to win games like this.”
Wolves boss Vitor Pereira expressed frustration with his team’s first-half performance but took pride in their second-half resurgence. “We showed too much respect in the first half,” he said. “The second half was fantastic. We need to play like that for 90 minutes.”
The result leaves Liverpool seven points clear at the top, while Wolves remain just two points above the relegation zone. For Liverpool, the focus now shifts to a challenging week ahead, with fixtures against Aston Villa and Manchester City looming large in their title bid.
