New Zealand Triumphs Over Pakistan in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Opener
New Zealand began their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a commanding 60-run victory over hosts Pakistan in Karachi. Centuries from Tom Latham (118 not out) and Will Young (107), alongside a blistering 61 from Glenn Phillips, propelled New Zealand to a formidable total of 320-5 after being put in to bat. Pakistan’s chase faltered early, managing just 22 runs in the first 10 overs, and despite a valiant 69 from Khushdil Shah, they were bowled out for 260 in 47.2 overs.
Pakistan’s decision to bowl first initially seemed justified as they reduced New Zealand to 73-3. However, a 118-run partnership between Young and Latham turned the tide, with Phillips accelerating in the final overs. Naseem Shah was Pakistan’s most successful bowler, taking 2-63. In reply, Pakistan struggled with a slow start, compounded by Fakhar Zaman’s injury, which limited his mobility. Babar Azam’s 64 off 90 balls was too slow for the required rate, and despite Khushdil’s late surge, Pakistan fell well short.
New Zealand’s bowlers, led by William O’Rourke (3-47) and Mitchell Santner (3-66), maintained consistent pressure. Santner praised his team’s disciplined bowling, particularly in the powerplay, while Latham highlighted the importance of partnerships and adapting to the pitch. Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan admitted his side underestimated New Zealand’s total, citing the Young-Latham partnership as pivotal. Pakistan now face a crucial match against India, while New Zealand will take on Bangladesh next.
