Pope Francis in Critical Condition Battling Lung Infection and Kidney Issues

Pope Francis remains in critical condition as he battles a complex lung infection and early signs of kidney failure, according to the latest updates from the Vatican. The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been hospitalised at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since 14 February, is receiving high-flow oxygen therapy and has undergone blood transfusions to address a low platelet count associated with anaemia. Despite his condition, he is described as alert and well-oriented.

The Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis is suffering from double pneumonia, a severe infection affecting both lungs, caused by multiple microorganisms. His medical team noted that his kidney function shows “initial, mild” failure but remains under control. The prognosis is described as “reserved,” with doctors emphasising the complexity of his clinical condition and the need for ongoing treatment and rest.

Francis, who has a history of respiratory issues due to pleurisy and the removal of part of one lung in his youth, has faced recurring health challenges in recent years. His current illness has sparked global concern, with prayers for his recovery pouring in from around the world. The Vatican has not commented on speculation about his potential resignation or succession plans.

The Pope was unable to lead Sunday prayers for the second consecutive week, with Archbishop Rino Fisichella delivering a pre-written homily on his behalf. In a message, Francis expressed gratitude for the medical care he is receiving and asked for continued prayers, particularly as the world approaches the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which he described as a “painful and shameful occasion for humanity.”

While his condition is not currently life-threatening, doctors have cautioned that the risk of complications, such as sepsis, remains a concern. Francis is expected to remain hospitalised for at least another week as his medical team monitors his progress.
