Presidents Day 2025; Closures and Celebrations
Presidents Day, a federal holiday observed on Monday, 17 February 2025, will see the closure of government offices, schools, banks, and the U.S. Postal Service. The holiday, originally established to honour George Washington’s birthday on 22 February, was moved to the third Monday in February in 1971 under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. It is also commonly associated with celebrating Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on 12 February.
The U.S. stock market will also be closed, and regular mail services will be suspended, though Priority Mail Express will still operate. Most grocery stores, fast-food chains, and retail outlets will remain open, making it a busy day for businesses. Nonessential federal employees will have the day off, and many state and local government offices, including courthouses and DMVs, will also be closed.
While the holiday is often marked by sales and promotions, it remains a time to reflect on the contributions of the nation’s presidents, particularly Washington and Lincoln.
