Rangers Seek New Manager After Philippe Clement's Sacking

Rangers are on the hunt for a new manager after Philippe Clement was sacked following a 2-0 home defeat to St Mirren, leaving the club 13 points adrift of Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic. The Belgian coach’s departure after just 16 months in charge has sparked a flurry of speculation over his successor, with several high-profile names linked to the Ibrox hotseat.

Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has emerged as the bookmakers’ favourite, with odds of 5/4, to take over on an interim basis until the end of the season. The 47-year-old, a five-time Scottish Premiership winner with the club, has been out of management since leaving Alloa Athletic in 2022. His potential appointment has divided fans, many of whom had hoped for a return of Steven Gerrard, the current 4/1 second favourite. Gerrard, who led Rangers to an unbeaten league title in 2020/21, is without a club after leaving Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in January.

Other contenders include former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, priced at 5/1, and Kasper Hjulmand, the former Denmark national team manager, at 7/1. Steven Davis, a former Rangers midfielder and caretaker manager, is also in the mix at 9/1, alongside Jack Wilshere, the young Norwich City coach, at 12/1.

The decision comes at a pivotal time for Rangers, who remain in European competition but face an uphill battle domestically. With a potential takeover by a group backed by the San Francisco 49ers nearing completion, the club’s next managerial appointment could signal a new era at Ibrox.
