UK Braces for Severe Weather; Flooding and High Winds Forecast

The Met Office has issued a series of weather warnings for wind and rain across much of the UK, with significant impacts expected in several regions. An amber warning for rain is in place for south and central Wales, valid until 06:00 GMT on Monday, with forecasts predicting 50mm to 100mm of rainfall. This could lead to flooding, travel disruption, and potential danger to life, particularly in areas already affected by recent flooding. Rhondda Cynon Taf council has deployed sandbags to high-risk areas in preparation.

Yellow warnings for rain and wind are also in effect for parts of southern Wales, southwest England, and the Midlands, with up to 100mm of rain expected on south-facing hills. Wind gusts of up to 70mph have been recorded in exposed areas, causing travel disruption and power supply issues. In the South West, a yellow warning for wind remains in place until 18:00 on Sunday, with speeds of 50-60mph anticipated. Penzance Council has warned of large breaking waves posing risks to coastal areas.

The weather shift is attributed to a low-pressure system moving across the Atlantic, bringing changeable conditions and cooler temperatures closer to seasonal averages. While the worst of the weather is expected on Sunday, blustery conditions and residual rain may persist into Monday. Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious, particularly in flood-prone areas.
