Virat Kohli's Century Leads India to Victory Over Pakistan in ICC Champions Trophy
Virat Kohli’s masterful century guided India to a commanding six-wicket victory over Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy, solidifying their position in the tournament and leaving Pakistan on the brink of elimination. Kohli’s unbeaten 100 off 111 balls, his 51st ODI century, was the cornerstone of India’s successful chase of 242 in Dubai. His innings, laced with seven boundaries, not only sealed the win but also saw him surpass 14,000 ODI runs, becoming the fastest to reach the milestone in just 287 innings.
Pakistan, after winning the toss, posted 241 in 49.4 overs, with Saud Shakeel (62) and Mohammad Rizwan (46) forming a crucial 104-run partnership. However, their innings faltered in the latter stages, losing their last eight wickets for just 90 runs. India’s bowlers, led by Kuldeep Yadav (3-40), kept the pressure on, while Kohli’s sharp fielding also contributed, as he claimed two catches to become India’s leading outfielder in terms of ODI catches.
India’s chase began steadily, with Shubman Gill (46) and Kohli laying a solid foundation. Shreyas Iyer (56) then joined Kohli in a 114-run partnership that effectively sealed the game. Despite late wickets, Kohli remained composed, reaching his century with a trademark cover drive and ensuring victory with seven overs to spare.
Kohli, named Player of the Match, reflected on his performance, stating, “It feels good to be able to back in that manner in an important game where we wanted to seal our qualification into the semis.” He emphasised his role in controlling the middle overs and praised Iyer for accelerating the innings.
The win puts India in a strong position to qualify for the semi-finals, while Pakistan face an uphill battle to stay in the tournament. Kohli’s return to form and his ability to deliver in high-pressure matches once again underscored his status as one of the game’s modern greats.
