Chelsea Crushes Southampton 4-0 to Reclaim Top Four Spot

Chelsea returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion with a 4-0 victory over Southampton at Stamford Bridge, temporarily reclaiming a spot in the Premier League’s top four. The Blues, who had won just three of their previous 12 matches in all competitions, dominated from the outset, easing past a struggling Southampton side that remains rooted to the bottom of the table.

Christopher Nkunku opened the scoring in the 24th minute, heading in Tosin Adarabioyo’s flick-on from a corner. Nkunku then turned provider 12 minutes later, setting up Pedro Neto, who slotted home a low finish past Saints goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Levi Colwill added a third just before half-time, rising highest to nod in Neto’s wide free-kick. Marc Cucurella completed the rout in the 78th minute, finishing off a swift counter-attack after being set up by substitute Tyrique George.

Despite the comprehensive win, Chelsea’s star forward Cole Palmer endured another frustrating evening, failing to end a seven-game goal drought. The 21-year-old missed several presentable chances, including a one-on-one opportunity saved by Ramsdale and a free-kick that was comfortably dealt with. Manager Enzo Maresca, however, remained optimistic, insisting that Palmer’s goals will come.

The match also saw Premier League debuts for Chelsea teenagers Mathis Amougou and Shumaira Mheuka, highlighting the club’s commitment to integrating young talent. Meanwhile, Southampton’s woes continued, with the Saints booed by their own fans at half-time. The visitors, who have now lost nine of their last 10 league games, created little of note, with Paul Onuachu’s first-half header their only real chance.

The victory provided a temporary reprieve for Chelsea amid ongoing fan protests against the club’s ownership. Around 200 supporters gathered outside Stamford Bridge before kick-off, voicing their discontent with banners and smoke flares. While the win may ease tensions in the short term, deeper concerns about the club’s direction remain unresolved. For now, Chelsea can celebrate a much-needed three points as they reignite their push for Champions League qualification.
