Manchester United's New Signing Patrick Dorgu Sees Red in Tough Match Against Ipswich Town
Manchester United’s new signing Patrick Dorgu was sent off during Wednesday night’s match against Ipswich Town following a VAR intervention. The £30 million left-back, who joined the club recently, was shown a straight red card by referee Darren England for a reckless challenge on Ipswich forward Omari Hutchinson. The tackle, which saw Dorgu catch Hutchinson high on the shin with his studs up, was deemed serious foul play after a lengthy VAR review. TNT Sports pundits described the challenge as “reckless” and “a straight red card, all day, every day.”
The incident compounded a difficult night for United, who had already fallen behind early in the game due to a defensive error by Dorgu. Ipswich capitalized on the numerical advantage, scoring a second goal shortly after the red card to level the score at 2-2 before halftime. Manager Ruben Amorim was forced to reshuffle his team, with Alejandro Garnacho making way for Noussair Mazraoui. Despite the setback, United regained the lead early in the second half, heading home a corner to make it 3-2.
The match highlighted United’s ongoing struggles this season, with the team having won just two of their last 10 Premier League games. The club currently sits 15th in the table, with injuries and inconsistent performances continuing to plague their campaign. Dorgu’s dismissal adds to the challenges faced by Amorim, who is already dealing with a depleted squad due to long-term absences, including Luke Shaw, Jonny Evans, and Amad Diallo.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are reportedly planning to play post-season friendly matches in Malaysia and Hong Kong following the conclusion of the Premier League campaign in May. The club, which has a significant fan base in Asia, last played in Malaysia in 2009 and Hong Kong in 2013. These fixtures are part of efforts to boost revenues, with the team also set to participate in the Premier League’s pre-season tournament in the United States next summer. The increased workload on players has sparked debate, with concerns over fixture congestion and player welfare.
