New Look Winds Down Irish Operations, 347 Jobs at Risk
Fashion retailer New Look has begun winding down its operations in Ireland, with 26 stores set to close and 347 jobs at risk. The decision follows years of sustained losses and challenging market conditions, including rising supply-chain costs and squeezed consumer spending. The High Court in Dublin approved the appointment of provisional liquidators last week, and impacted staff were notified shortly after. A 30-day consultation process is underway, with a collective redundancy process expected to affect all employees in the Republic of Ireland.
The affected stores reopened on Sunday for a final liquidation sale, offering discounts of up to 50% on remaining stock. Shoppers queued for hours outside locations such as Cork’s Opera Lane and Letterkenny in Co Donegal, eager to take advantage of the clearance deals. New Look’s Irish operations, which began in 2003, will cease trading entirely once the stock is cleared, though the timeline for closures may vary by store.
The company has stated that its Irish business is no longer viable, despite efforts to adapt through marketing initiatives, store changes, and price adjustments. New Look will now refocus its investment on its UK operations and digital platforms, with its collections remaining available online through retailers Asos and Very. The closure has raised concerns about reduced competition in the Irish retail market and the potential impact on employee morale across the sector.
