Rare Planetary Parade to Illuminate UK Skies This Week

A rare celestial event is set to grace the UK skies this week, as seven planets align in a phenomenon known as a “planetary parade.” This alignment, featuring Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, will be the last of its kind visible in the UK until 2040. The best viewing opportunities will occur just after sunset on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, with clear skies offering the optimal conditions for stargazers.

Four of the planets—Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and Mars—will be visible to the naked eye, while Saturn will be harder to spot due to its low position on the horizon. Uranus and Neptune, however, will require binoculars or a telescope for observation. Venus and Jupiter are expected to be the brightest and easiest to identify, with Mars displaying its characteristic reddish hue. Uranus, though technically visible without aid, will require ideal conditions and sharp eyesight.

Dr. Edward Bloomer, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, emphasised the rarity of this event, stating, “There’s a rare opportunity to have seven planets in essentially a convenient place for you to look for them.” He advised observers to find a location with minimal light pollution and a clear view of the horizon, allowing their eyes time to adjust to the darkness.

Weather conditions are expected to vary across the UK. While Wednesday night may bring cloudier skies and showers, Thursday and Friday are forecast to offer clearer views, particularly in the early evening. High pressure on Friday will likely keep most areas dry, though mist and fog patches may develop later in the night.

This planetary alignment occurs as the planets orbit the Sun within the same flat plane as Earth, creating the illusion of a line-up from our perspective. While the planets remain separated by vast distances in space, their alignment offers a unique spectacle for skywatchers. Dr. Bloomer encouraged the public to take advantage of this event, noting that it provides “a chance to witness the ongoing mechanics of the solar system at work.”

For those hoping to catch a glimpse of all seven planets, the window of opportunity will be brief, particularly for Saturn and Mercury, which will set shortly after sunset. Observers are advised to plan ahead, using astronomical tools or websites to locate the planets and ensure the best possible viewing experience.
