UK Braces for Snow, Hail, and Heavy Rain Amid Unsettled Weather
The UK is set to experience a dramatic shift in weather conditions, with snow, hail, and heavy rain expected to hit parts of the country. On Wednesday morning, a flurry of snow is predicted to drift in from the west, particularly affecting areas such as Preston and Kendal, with more than four millimetres of snow per hour forecasted. Light hail is also expected across northern regions, including Manchester and parts of southern Scotland. Meanwhile, heavy rain will sweep across the south-west of England, moving eastwards throughout the day.
The Met Office has indicated that snow could settle on higher ground in southern Scotland and northern England, particularly in the Pennines and Southern Uplands at elevations above 400-450 metres. However, any accumulations are expected to be modest, with no weather warnings issued. The wintry conditions are expected to ease by midday, with temperatures rising slightly to around 7°C.
Looking ahead, the weather is set to remain unsettled, with outbreaks of heavy rain moving eastwards on Wednesday, followed by sunny spells and frequent showers. Thursday and Friday are expected to be drier for most, with sunny spells and occasional showers. However, patchy rain is forecast to move southwards on Saturday, with overnight frosts likely in areas where skies remain clear.
In contrast, early March could bring a welcome change, with temperatures in the UK potentially surpassing those in Madrid. Advanced weather modelling suggests that from March 6 to March 8, temperatures in central and southern England could reach highs of 13°C to 16°C, well above the March average of 9°C. The south-east is expected to see the best of the weather, with Wales also enjoying milder conditions. However, northern regions may not experience the same warmth, with temperatures remaining in single figures. The Met Office predicts a split in weather conditions, with fine, dry weather likely in the south, while the north-west faces bouts of rain and stronger winds.
