Virgin Media Broadband Outage Disrupts UK Services

Virgin Media customers across the UK experienced a partial broadband outage on 24th February 2025, caused by a routing issue within the provider’s network. The disruption began at approximately 10:00 GMT and lasted for around two hours, with services gradually returning to normal by midday.

A Virgin Media spokesperson acknowledged the issue, stating, “We’re aware that some customers are experiencing intermittent issues with their services. We apologise for any inconvenience and are working to fix this as a priority.” The problem appeared to stem from a peering or routing issue with some of Virgin Media’s network partners, rather than a physical broadband connection failure.

Some customers reported being able to bypass the issue by switching to third-party DNS providers or using VPNs. However, others faced difficulties accessing remote office VPN systems, Microsoft 365, and other Azure-hosted services. Traceroute data indicated that connections to certain domains were timing out on peering provided by Twelve99.net, one of Virgin Media’s backhaul providers.

While the majority of Virgin Media’s broadband customers were unaffected, the outage caused significant disruption for those impacted, particularly remote workers and businesses reliant on cloud-based services. The incident highlights the vulnerabilities in network infrastructure and the potential for cascading effects when routing issues arise. Virgin Media has not yet provided further details on the root cause of the problem or measures being taken to prevent future occurrences.
