Significant changes to car tax rules in the UK will affect older drivers and vehicle owners from April 2025, including the end of age-based exemptions and new charges for electric and high-emission vehicles.
From April 2025, drivers of older vehicles, including elderly motorists, will face significant increases in Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) as part of government changes aimed at encouraging the switch to electric vehicles. The new rules will particularly affect vehicles registered between 2001 and 2017, with rates rising in line with the Retail Price Index.
