डीएमके के उम्मीदवार वी.सी. चंद्रकुमार ने 8 फरवरी, 2025 को ईरोड (ईस्ट) विधानसभा उपचुनाव में भारी जीत दर्ज की। उन्होंने नाम तमिलर कट्ची (एनटीके) की उम्मीदवार एम.के. सीतालक्ष्मी को 91,558 वोटों के अंतर से हराया। चंद्रकुमार को कुल 1,15,709 वोट मिले, जबकि सीतालक्ष्मी को 24,151 वोट मिले। इस चुनाव में 46 उम्मीदवार मैदान में थे, जिनमें से 44 स्वतंत्र प्रत्याशी थे। एआईएडीएमके और भाजपा जैसे प्रमुख विपक्षी दलों ने इस उपचुनाव का बहिष्कार किया था।
उपचुनाव की नौबत कांग्रेस विधायक ई.वी.के.एस. इलांगोवन के 14 दिसंबर, 2024 को निधन के बाद पैदा हुई थी। मतदान 5 फरवरी, 2025 को हुआ था और मतगणना 8 फरवरी को की गई। डीएमके के प्रवक्ता सरवनन अन्नादुरई ने कहा कि यह जीत मुख्यमंत्री एम.के. स्टालिन और उनकी सरकार की नीतियों का परिणाम है।
मतगणना के दौरान, चंद्रकुमार ने शुरुआती दौर से ही बढ़त बना ली और हर दौर में अपना अंतर बढ़ाते गए। नोटा (नन ऑफ द अबव) को 6,109 वोट मिले, जो तीसरे स्थान पर रहा। एनटीके की सीतालक्ष्मी ने आरोप लगाया कि डीएमके ने चुनावी धांधली की है, लेकिन उन्होंने कहा कि 2026 के विधानसभा चुनाव में उनकी पार्टी बेहतर प्रदर्शन करेगी।
यह जीत डीएमके के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है, क्योंकि यह 2026 के विधानसभा चुनाव से पहले पार्टी की जनाधार को मजबूत करती है।
