न्यूजीलैंड के युवा क्रिकेटर रचिन रविंद्र को पाकिस्तान के खिलाफ ट्राई सीरीज के पहले मैच में गंभीर चोट लगी। मैच के 37वें ओवर में, रविंद्र डीप स्क्वायर लेग पर फील्डिंग कर रहे थे, जब खुशदिल शाह ने माइकल ब्रेसवेल की गेंद को स्लॉग स्वीप करते हुए उनकी ओर मारा। रविंद्र ने कैच लेने का प्रयास किया, लेकिन गेंद को मिड-फ्लाइट में मिस कर दिया और यह सीधे उनके माथे पर लगी। इससे उनके माथे से खून बहने लगा और वह मैदान पर ही बेहोश हो गए। मेडिकल स्टाफ ने तुरंत उनकी देखभाल की और उन्हें स्ट्रेचर पर मैदान से बाहर ले जाया गया। हालांकि, रविंद्र ने खुद चलकर मैदान छोड़ा और उन्हें तालियों की गड़गड़ाहट के साथ विदा किया गया।
न्यूजीलैंड क्रिकेट (NZC) ने बाद में एक बयान जारी कर कहा कि रविंद्र ने हेड इंजरी असेसमेंट (HIA) पास कर लिया है और उनके माथे पर लगी चोट को टांके लगाकर ठीक किया गया है। हालांकि, उनके दक्षिण अफ्रीका के खिलाफ अगले मैच में खेलने की संभावना नहीं है। NZC ने कहा कि उनकी सेहत ठीक है और उन पर नजर रखी जा रही है।
इस घटना के बाद मैदान पर सन्नाटा छा गया, लेकिन न्यूजीलैंड ने ग्लेन फिलिप्स के शानदार शतक (106 रन) की बदौलत मैच 78 रन से जीत लिया। रविंद्र ने मैच में 19 गेंदों में 25 रन की तेज पारी भी खेली थी।
यह घटना चैंपियंस ट्रॉफी से ठीक पहले हुई है, जो 19 फरवरी से शुरू हो रही है। न्यूजीलैंड और पाकिस्तान इस टूर्नामेंट में एक-दूसरे के खिलाफ खेलेंगे। इस बीच, पाकिस्तान के तेज गेंदबाज हारिस रऊफ को भी साइड स्ट्रेन की चोट के कारण मैदान छोड़ना पड़ा।
