न्यूजीलैंड ने पाकिस्तान को 78 रनों से हराकर ट्राई-नेशन सीरीज का पहला मैच जीत लिया। यह मुकाबला लाहौर के गद्दाफी स्टेडियम में खेला गया। न्यूजीलैंड ने टॉस जीतकर पहले बल्लेबाजी करते हुए 6 विकेट पर 330 रन बनाए। ग्लेन फिलिप्स ने 72 गेंदों में शतक जड़ा, जिसमें उन्होंने आखिरी 32 गेंदों में 77 रन बनाए। उनके अलावा, डैरिल मिचेल (81) और केन विलियमसन (58) ने भी अर्धशतक बनाए। पाकिस्तान की ओर से शाहीन अफरीदी ने 3 विकेट लिए।
पाकिस्तान ने जवाब में 252 रन बनाए। फखर जमान ने 84 रन की शानदार पारी खेली, लेकिन उनके आउट होने के बाद पाकिस्तान की पारी धराशायी हो गई। मिचेल सैंटनर ने 3 विकेट लेकर न्यूजीलैंड की जीत में अहम भूमिका निभाई। पाकिस्तान के लिए एक और बुरी खबर यह रही कि हारिस रौफ चोटिल हो गए और बल्लेबाजी नहीं कर सके।
न्यूजीलैंड की टीम ने आखिरी छह ओवरों में 98 रन बनाकर मैच का रुख अपने पक्ष में कर लिया। फिलिप्स ने आखिरी ओवर में 25 रन बनाए और अपना पहला वनडे शतक पूरा किया। पाकिस्तान की टीम ने शुरुआत में अच्छा प्रदर्शन किया, लेकिन वह न्यूजीलैंड के स्कोर के करीब भी नहीं पहुंच सकी।
यह मैच आगामी चैंपियंस ट्रॉफी से पहले तैयारी के तौर पर खेला गया है। न्यूजीलैंड ने इस जीत के साथ टूर्नामेंट में अच्छी शुरुआत की है।
