土曜日の夜、カリブ海でマグニチュード7.6の強い地震が発生し、複数の国に津波警報が発令されましたが、後に警報は解除されました。米国地質調査所（USGS）によると、震源地はホンジュラスの北約20マイル、ケイマン諸島の南西約130マイルに位置していました。米国津波警報システムが最初に発令した警報では、キューバ、ジャマイカ、ホンジュラス、ケイマン諸島、およびその他の近隣諸国の沿岸地域で最大3メートル（10フィート）の波が予測されました。プエルトリコと米領バージン諸島にも注意報が発令されましたが、後に解除されました。
