ประธานาธิบดีโดนัลด์ ทรัมป์ ได้ลงนามในกฎหมาย Laken Riley Act เมื่อวันที่ 29 มกราคม 2025 ซึ่งถือเป็นชัยชนะทางกฎหมายครั้งแรกในวาระที่สองของเขา กฎหมายนี้ตั้งชื่อตาม Laken Riley นักศึกษาพยาบาลวัย 22 ปีจากจอร์เจียที่ถูกสังหารโดยผู้อพยพที่ไม่มีเอกสารในปี 2023 โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเสริมสร้างการบังคับใช้กฎหมายการเข้าเมืองด้วยการกำหนดให้ต้องกักตัวผู้อพยพที่ไม่มีเอกสารซึ่งถูกกล่าวหาว่ากระทำความผิดเช่น การขโมย การบุกรุก การลักทรัพย์ หรือการโจรกรรม นอกจากนี้กฎหมายยังอนุญาตให้รัฐสามารถฟ้องรัฐบาลกลางได้หากมีการละเมิดในการบังคับใช้กฎหมายการเข้าเมือง
กฎหมายนี้ผ่านสภาผู้แทนราษฎรด้วยคะแนน 263 ต่อ 156 โดยได้รับการสนับสนุนจากพรรคเดโมแครต 46 คน และผ่านวุฒิสภาได้ด้วยคะแนน 64 ต่อ 35 รวมถึงพรรคเดโมแครต 12 คน ทรัมป์ได้ยกย่อง Riley ว่าเป็น “แสงสว่างแห่งความอบอุ่นและความเมตตา” และให้เครดิตว่าการเสียชีวิตของเธอทำให้สมาชิกรัฐสภาจากทั้งสองพรรคร่วมมือกัน แม่ของ Riley, Allyson Phillips ได้แสดงความขอบคุณต่อกฎหมายนี้ โดยกล่าวว่า “ความหวังเดียวของเราที่จะก้าวต่อไปคือชีวิตของเธอจะช่วยชีวิตคนอื่นได้”
