Tragedy Strikes Tuskegee University's Homecoming Celebration; 18-Year-Old Killed in Shooting
In a tragic incident at Alabama’s Tuskegee University, a shooting during the school’s centennial homecoming celebration resulted in the death of an 18-year-old, La’Tavion Johnson, and left 16 others injured. The suspect, 25-year-old Jaquez Myrick from Montgomery, was apprehended as he was attempting to leave the scene with a handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device. Myrick was charged with federal possession of a machine gun, but as of now, he has not been charged in connection with the death or injuries resulting from the shooting.
The shooting occurred early on a Sunday morning, around 1:40 a.m., during the final day of homecoming festivities at the historically Black university. Among the injured, twelve people sustained gunshot wounds, while four incurred non-gunfire-related injuries. The injured individuals were taken to area hospitals, though it is unclear how many were university students.
In response to the incident, classes at Tuskegee University were canceled, and grief counselors were provided to support the campus community. Local authorities, along with the FBI, are actively seeking assistance from the public to gather further information, including video footage related to the event.
This incident is a part of a concerning trend of violence surrounding homecoming events at universities across the Southern United States. The local community and university officials have expressed shock and are urging solidarity in the wake of this senseless act of violence.
