Jack Del Rio Resigns After OWI Arrest, Impacting Wisconsin Football

Jack Del Rio, the senior adviser to the University of Wisconsin’s football program, has resigned following his arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI). The incident occurred early on Friday morning when Del Rio struck a street sign, broke a fence, and parked in a residential yard in Madison.

Del Rio, 61, showed signs of impairment when approached by police after witnesses directed them to him as he attempted to leave the scene. He admitted to driving the vehicle and was subsequently arrested and cited for first-time OWI. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the collision.

In a statement, Del Rio expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with coach Luke Fickell and the team but chose to resign to allow the Badgers to focus on their current season. Coach Fickell emphasized the importance of taking responsibility and acknowledged the serious nature of the incident.

Del Rio, who joined Wisconsin’s staff in August after a lengthy career in the NFL, has faced criticism and scrutiny following this development. The University of Wisconsin issued a statement affirming their commitment to addressing such matters seriously and gathering further information on the incident. Del Rio’s resignation marks a significant turn in his career after a history of coaching at the highest levels of football, including serving as head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Oakland Raiders.
