Craig Melvin Joins NBC's 'Today' Show as New Co-Anchor
Craig Melvin has been named the new co-anchor of NBC’s “Today” show, stepping into the role alongside Savannah Guthrie starting January 13, 2025. This announcement comes following Hoda Kotb’s decision to depart from the show after nearly two decades, with her final appearance scheduled for January 10.
Melvin, who has been with NBC News for nearly 14 years, expressed his excitement and gratitude for the new role, stating, “I am beyond excited and grateful. I’ve enjoyed just a lifetime of blessings, and this is the latest in a long line of blessings.” During the announcement, Guthrie remarked that Melvin’s selection was one of the most popular decisions ever made by NBC News, highlighting his integral role within the “Today” family.
Having co-hosted the third hour of “Today,” Melvin’s transition to the 7 and 8 a.m. slots is expected to be seamless for viewers. He has been recognized for his versatile coverage, which includes breaking news, presidential interviews, and events like the Olympics and Super Bowls. Libby Leist, senior vice president of “Today,” praised Melvin’s talent and unique Southern charm.
In light of Kotb’s departure, the fourth hour of the show will be renamed “Today with Jenna & Friends,” featuring a rotating cast of co-hosts until a permanent replacement is named. Kotb, who cited a desire to spend more time with her children as a key reason for stepping down, will continue to contribute to NBC in a new capacity.
Melvin’s ascension marks a new chapter for the “Today” show, reinforcing its commitment to delivering comprehensive morning news while maintaining its connection with audiences.
