Unraveling Faked Disappearance; The Case of Ryan Borgwardt
Authorities in Wisconsin are investigating a case involving Ryan Borgwardt, a 45-year-old man believed to have faked his own death after going missing while kayaking. Initially reported missing on August 12, Borgwardt’s disappearance led to an extensive 54-day search, which included divers, drones, and sonar equipment, but no trace of him was found.
Evidence has since emerged suggesting Borgwardt may have staged the incident. Following a review of records, investigators found that Borgwardt’s name was checked by Canadian border officials the day after he was reported missing. Further analysis of his laptop revealed troubling evidence: he had taken out a $375,000 life insurance policy, transferred funds to a foreign bank, and replaced the hard drive of his laptop along with clearing its browsing history on the day of his disappearance.
In light of these developments, law enforcement now believes Borgwardt is alive and may be in Eastern Europe. Authorities are considering charges including obstruction and fraudulent activity. Despite the ongoing investigation, Borgwardt’s family, including his wife, has been cooperative, with authorities commending her strength throughout this ordeal.
In a separate incident, a Florida man has been charged with multiple felonies after deliberately knocking a fisherman off his kayak with a jet ski. This altercation, captured on social media, resulted in the man being arrested and charged with battery, criminal mischief, and reckless operation, among other offenses.
Meanwhile, in Hawaii, a 17-year-old boy was rescued after spending nearly 12 hours clinging to his kayak in the ocean. The U.S. Coast Guard and an off-duty lifeguard located him after he became separated from his high school paddling team. He suffered from injuries and hypothermia but has since stabilized.
As recreational kayaking continues to gain popularity, incidents concerning safety and responsibility highlight important considerations for enthusiasts navigating waterways.
