Recall Alert; Organic Carrots Tied to E. coli Outbreak Across 18 States
Federal health officials have issued a recall for various brands of organic whole and baby carrots due to a multistate outbreak of E. coli O121 infections linked to products sourced from Grimmway Farms. As of November 2024, the outbreak has affected at least 39 individuals across 18 states, with one reported death and 15 hospitalizations.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the affected carrots were sold in numerous retailers, including Walmart, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe’s, between August 14 and October 23, 2024. While these products are likely no longer on the market, many could still be present in consumers’ homes. The CDC advises individuals to check their refrigerators for any recalled products and either discard them or return them to the store.
Affected Brands Include: For whole organic carrots (available from August 14 to October 23):
- 365: 1 lb, 2 lb, 5 lb

Symptoms of E. coli infection may include severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting, typically appearing 3 to 4 days after exposure. Health authorities warn that the outbreak’s full extent may be larger than currently reported, as many individuals may not seek medical attention or testing.
Consumers who have these recalled products are urged to take immediate action by discarding them and sanitizing any surfaces they may have contacted. Further investigations are ongoing to determine the contamination’s source and whether other products may also be affected.
