Geno Auriemma Becomes Winningest Coach in College Basketball History
The UConn women’s basketball team achieved a remarkable milestone on November 20, 2024, as head coach Geno Auriemma became the all-time winningest coach in college basketball history. UConn triumphed over Fairleigh Dickinson with an impressive score of 85-41, marking Auriemma’s 1,217th career victory and surpassing the previous record held by Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer.
The historic game took place at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Connecticut, in front of a sellout crowd that included over 60 former UConn players. A special celebration followed the game, paying tribute to Auriemma and his long-time associate head coach, Chris Dailey, as they celebrated their 40th season together. The event featured speeches from UConn legends such as Sue Bird and Maya Moore, and various festivities, including a goat mascot to honor Auriemma’s “greatest of all time” status.
In the game itself, star players Paige Bueckers and Sarah Strong led the charge for UConn. Bueckers contributed 16 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, while Strong shined with a team-high 20 points, including hitting four three-pointers. The Huskies had a strong performance that allowed every player to score, showcasing their deep roster.
UConn improved their season record to 3-0 following this victory, while Fairleigh Dickinson, despite a promising start to their season, fell to 4-1. The Huskies’ next game is set against Oregon State in the Baha Mar Women’s Championship in the Bahamas on November 25, 2024.
