Baylor Bears Edge Out St. John's in Thrilling Double Overtime Victory at Baha Mar Hoops Championship
NASSAU, Bahamas – In a thrilling contest at the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship, the No. 13 Baylor Bears pulled off a remarkable comeback to defeat the No. 22 St. John’s Red Storm, 99-98, in double overtime. This victory not only showcased Baylor’s resilience but also featured a dramatic buzzer-beater by fifth-year guard Jeremy Roach, who scored the game-winning three-pointer after initially struggling in critical moments.
Baylor found itself down by as much as 18 points in the first half and trailed 44-30 at halftime. The Bears fought back, erasing the deficit and taking their first lead late in the second half. Despite missing crucial free throws in regulation and the first overtime, Baylor’s determination paid off when Roach capitalized on a final opportunity, nailing a three-pointer just as time expired.
Coach Scott Drew praised Roach’s performance, noting, “He’s a winner, he makes plays." Roach, who finished with 20 points, expressed gratitude for his teammates’ support during challenging moments. The Bears’ success was bolstered by strong contributions from Norchad Omier, who recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, and freshmen Robert Wright and Jalen Celestine.
St. John’s held a significant advantage during the first period, showcasing a potent offense led by Zuby Ejiofor, who scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. However, their inability to convert free throw opportunities in critical moments allowed Baylor a path back into the game. St. John’s coach Rick Pitino criticized the officiating, particularly a delay that “iced” his free throw shooter late in the game.
The Bears, now 4-1, will advance to face the No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers in the finals of the tournament. Drew emphasized the importance of the win, stating, “One thing I know is, you can’t underestimate the heart of a champion, and our guys will be ready tomorrow.” St. John’s will move on to compete against Virginia in a consolation matchup.
