Massive Ground Beef Recall; Wolverine Packing Co. Issues Urgent Warning

Wolverine Packing Co., a Detroit-based meat distributor, has issued a significant recall of over 167,000 pounds of ground beef due to potential E. coli contamination. This recall was prompted by at least 15 reported illnesses in Minnesota, where health officials linked the outbreak to ground beef products consumed from November 2 to November 10, 2024.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reported that the contaminated beef was shipped exclusively to restaurants across the United States. Fresh ground beef products have a use-by date of November 14, 2024, while frozen items are marked with an October 22, 2024 production date. All affected products bear the establishment number “EST. 2574B” inside the USDA inspection mark.

Symptoms of E. coli infection can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, typically occurring between two to eight days after exposure. While many individuals recover without medical intervention, others may develop serious complications, including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children and the elderly.

Wolverine Packing Co. has stated its commitment to working with food safety officials and conducting rigorous internal audits to improve its quality control processes. Consumers are being urged to dispose of any affected products that may be in their refrigerators or freezers and to take additional precautions when dining out, including asking about food sourcing and ensuring that beef is cooked to a safe temperature of 160°F.

As the situation develops, the FSIS continues to investigate, recommending that restaurants do not serve the recalled products to ensure public safety.
