Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals Trade Shakes Up MLB Roster
The Cincinnati Reds have made a significant trade, acquiring right-handed pitcher Brady Singer from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for infielder Jonathan India and outfielder Joey Wiemer. The deal, announced on Friday, showcases a swap between two former college teammates from the University of Florida, where they won a national championship together in 2017.
Brady Singer, 28, had a notable season in 2024, posting a 3.71 ERA with a 9-13 record over 32 starts. Throughout his five-year career in Kansas City, he has amassed a 4.28 ERA and has proven to be a durable starter, making at least 150 innings in each of the past three seasons. In joining the Reds, Singer aims to bolster a rotation that has dealt with injuries in recent years and lacks established depth.
Conversely, the Royals will benefit from Jonathan India, the 2021 National League Rookie of the Year, who brings critical on-base skills. In 2024, India hit .248 with 15 home runs and ranked fifth in MLB for walks. This addition is seen as vital for improving the Royals’ offense, especially given their struggles with on-base percentage in the previous season.
Wiemer, a 25-year-old who has split time between the Reds and Brewers, is viewed as a potential asset for the Royals as he offers notable raw power and speed, though he hasn’t yet found his footing in the major leagues.
Reds’ president of baseball operations, Nick Krall, expressed the team’s need for a reliable starter, highlighting the significant role Singer can play in their future. Meanwhile, the Royals are looking to enhance their lineup around stars like Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez.
