Flash Flood Warnings Across Bay Area Amid Atmospheric River Event
Flash flood warnings have been issued across several counties in the Bay Area as an atmospheric river continues to deliver heavy rain to Northern California. The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that instances of life-threatening flooding were occurring in areas including northwestern Alameda County and west-central Contra Costa County. Rainfall has ranged from 0.7 to 1.2 inches, with an additional 1 to 3 inches expected.
Warnings were activated just before 3 p.m. on Friday, covering cities such as Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, and San Pablo. Authorities urged residents to avoid flooded roads, with the advisory stating, “Turn around, don’t drown,” as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.
Earlier in the day, San Francisco had its own flash flood warning due to heavy rainfall creating hazardous conditions. NWS reported a significant amount of rainfall, prompting Mayor London Breed to advise residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. The situation worsened in the North Bay, where heavy rain caused flooding and mudslides, prompting road closures. A specific report detailed how a cascade of water and mud flooded streets in Santa Rosa, trapping hundreds at local hotels and medical facilities.
In Berkeley, flash flood warnings remained effective as severe flooding was reported at intersections such as Ashby Avenue and Seventh Street. A landslide at Grizzly Peak further complicated matters, with authorities advising against travel in the area.
The California Highway Patrol reported blocked lanes on various highways due to flooding, and emergency services are actively managing multiple incidents across the affected regions. The storm, preceded by a “bomb cyclone,” has heightened the risks of landslides and urban flooding throughout the Bay Area, stressing the importance of precautionary measures.
Residents are encouraged to prepare emergency kits, keep informed via local alerts, and take immediate action to move to higher ground if necessary. Updates will be provided as the situation develops.
