Moana 2 Set to Break Thanksgiving Box Office Records
Disney’s highly anticipated animated sequel, Moana 2, is set to make waves at the box office this Thanksgiving, with projections indicating a record-breaking opening of $125 million to $135 million over the holiday weekend. This would surpass the previous Thanksgiving record held by Frozen II, which grossed $125 million in its debut.
The film, which reunites voice stars Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, is scheduled for release on November 27. Early tracking shows ticket presales outpacing that of other major animated hits, including Disney’s Inside Out 2 and Incredibles 2. The buzz surrounding the film has already earned it the nickname “Moanapocalypse” among box office experts.
As excitement builds, Moana 2 is capturing the attention of a diverse audience, particularly millennials who fondly remember the original 2016 film, along with children aged 6-11. It’s seen as vital for theater owners hoping to revive sluggish box office performance after a disappointing fall season, which has seen a drop in overall ticket sales of around 11% compared to last year.
In addition to its expected box office success, Moana 2 features new music from Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear. Disney has submitted two songs from the film, “Beyond” and “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?”, for consideration in the Oscars’ Best Original Song category.
As the holiday approaches, the competition is heating up with other anticipated releases, including Wicked and Gladiator II, which are also projected to perform strongly. The Thanksgiving weekend, historically a lucrative time for theaters, could see a resurgence in ticket sales, with estimates suggesting the possibility of setting new records for the holiday period.
