UTSA Roadrunners Clinch Bowl Eligibility with Victory Over Temple Owls
The UTSA Roadrunners secured a commanding victory over the Temple Owls, winning 51-27 in a Friday night American Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup at the Alamodome. This win not only improved UTSA’s record to 6-5 overall but also made them bowl eligible for the fifth consecutive season under head coach Jeff Traylor.
UTSA showcased a potent offense, accumulating 530 total yards, including 310 on the ground. Quarterback Owen McCown had an impressive outing, going 20-for-27 for 220 passing yards with one touchdown, and he added a rushing touchdown as well. Running back Robert Henry Jr. led the ground attack, rushing for 178 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
The game began strongly for the Roadrunners, who took an early lead with a 40-yard touchdown run from Henry on their opening drive. Temple responded with a field goal but fell behind again when McCown rushed for a 75-yard touchdown, making it 14-3. The Owls managed to cut the deficit to 14-10 thanks to a touchdown pass from Evan Simon to Dante Wright after a critical interception by D.J. Woodbury.
Despite Temple’s efforts to maintain competitiveness, including another touchdown drive just before halftime, UTSA utilized a kickoff return for a touchdown by Chris Carpenter shortly after Temple scored, extending their lead back to 21-10. The Roadrunners continued to build their advantage in the second half, scoring frequently and dominating offensively, ultimately sealing the game with a final rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Temple’s Dante Wright emerged as a standout player for the Owls, recording two touchdowns along with 128 receiving yards. Despite their loss, Wright’s performance marked a significant highlight for the struggling Owls, who dropped to a 3-8 season record.
Looking ahead, Temple will aim to recover at home against North Texas, while UTSA prepares to close their season against Army. The Roadrunners’ recent form, including three wins in their last four games, positions them for a hopeful conclusion to their campaign as they chase another postseason opportunity.
