Scott Turner Nominated to Lead HUD in Historic Appointment
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Scott Turner, a former NFL player and Texas state representative, to lead the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Turner, 52, is recognized as the first Black individual selected for a position in Trump’s Cabinet.
Turner’s journey began in Richardson, Texas, where he graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He spent nine seasons in the NFL, playing as a defensive back for the Washington Redskins, San Diego Chargers, and Denver Broncos before transitioning into politics. After a failed bid for Congress in California’s 50th District in 2006, he moved back to Texas and was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2013, serving until 2017.
In his previous tenure under Trump, Turner led the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, which focused on driving investment into designated economically distressed areas known as “Opportunity Zones.” His leadership in this role was praised by Trump, who noted that Turner helped lead “an unprecedented effort” to uplift communities in need.
As HUD secretary, Turner will oversee the administration of critical housing programs aimed at addressing the country’s housing needs, including the management of rental subsidies for low-income families and enforcing fair housing laws. His appointment comes during a period of anticipated budget cuts to HUD, a continuation of efforts proposed during Trump’s first term.
Turner’s nomination has garnered support from various political leaders and community figures in North Texas. His contributions to both the sports and political arenas, combined with his background in community engagement initiatives, position him as a significant figure in the incoming administration’s housing policy agenda.
