Microsoft Grapples with Widespread Outage Impacting Outlook and Teams
Microsoft is facing significant challenges following a widespread outage affecting its Outlook and Teams services. The disruptions began on November 25, 2024, around 8 a.m. ET and reached a peak with over 5,000 reports from users, as tracked by Downdetector. Many professionals relied on these tools for communications, making the timing particularly inconvenient as the Thanksgiving holiday approached.
The company announced that most services had been restored by the evening of the same day, with a full resolution expected by November 26. However, users of Outlook on the web continued to experience issues, prompting Microsoft to implement fixes and conduct manual restarts to regain functionality across its services.
Initial reports indicated that the outage was caused by a “recent change” made during a software update, which subsequently created complications across multiple systems, including Exchange Online. Microsoft communicated updates via its official social media channels throughout the day, assuring users that recovery efforts were ongoing.
While the majority of users reported improved access to Outlook and Teams by late Monday, some lingering problems remained, particularly for those accessing Outlook online. Microsoft stated that approximately 98% of affected environments had received the necessary updates, but progress was slower than anticipated for many.
This incident underscores the dependency of businesses on Microsoft’s cloud services, highlighting concerns that have arisen in the wake of previous large-scale tech outages experienced by other companies this year. As the company works to stabilize its services, users are encouraged to monitor the Microsoft 365 status page for real-time updates.
