2025 NBA All-Star Game Starters Announced with New Tournament Format
The 2025 NBA All-Star Game starters have been announced, with a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars set to take the court in San Francisco. The game, scheduled for February 16 at the Chase Center, will feature a new four-team mini-tournament format, replacing the traditional East vs. West matchup.
In the Western Conference, the starters include Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić, Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, and Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant. Gilgeous-Alexander, the league’s leading scorer, is making his third All-Star appearance, while James extends his record with his 21st selection. Curry and Durant continue to showcase their dominance, with Curry earning his 11th nod and Durant his 14th. Jokić, a three-time MVP, remains a force in the frontcourt.
The Eastern Conference starters feature New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell, Knicks forward Karl-Anthony Towns, Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum. Antetokounmpo, the leading vote-getter among fans, is enjoying one of his best seasons, while Tatum and Mitchell continue to shine as perennial All-Stars. Brunson’s inclusion marks a notable achievement for the Knicks, who have two starters for the second consecutive year.
One of the biggest surprises was the exclusion of San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama, who many believed deserved a starting spot. Despite his stellar season, Wembanyama was edged out by veterans like James and Durant. Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball, who led fan voting among East guards, also missed out, with Brunson and Mitchell securing the starting backcourt spots.
The All-Star reserves, to be announced on January 30, will round out the 24-player pool. The new format will see TNT analysts Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kenny Smith draft three teams of eight players each, while the fourth team will consist of the winner of the Rising Stars Challenge. The tournament will feature two semifinal games and a final, with each game played to a target score of 40 points.
