2025 NBA All-Star Game Unveils New Format and Star-Studded Lineup
The 2025 NBA All-Star Game, set to take place on February 16 at San Francisco’s Chase Center, will feature a new format and a star-studded lineup of starters. The league announced the 10 starters, with fan voting accounting for 50% of the selection process, while player and media votes each contributed 25%.
In the Eastern Conference, the starters include Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, who led all players in fan votes, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell, and Knicks guard Jalen Brunson. Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP, continues to dominate with 31.5 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists per game, while Mitchell has been instrumental in the Cavaliers’ surprising success this season.
The Western Conference starters are headlined by Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić, who is having another MVP-caliber season with 30.1 points, 13.2 rebounds, and 9.9 assists per game. Joining him are Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, making his record 21st All-Star appearance, Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who leads the league in scoring at 32 points per game.
This year’s All-Star Game will feature a four-team tournament format, with three teams composed of the 24 All-Stars and a fourth team made up of the winners of the Rising Stars Challenge. TNT analysts Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kenny Smith will draft the All-Star teams, while Candace Parker will serve as honorary GM for the Rising Stars team. The tournament will consist of two semifinal games and a championship, with the first team to reach 40 points in each game declared the winner.
Notably, San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama, a favorite for Defensive Player of the Year, was snubbed from the starting lineup despite his impressive season. Other notable omissions include Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball, who led Eastern Conference guards in fan voting but finished seventh in media voting, and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards, who many argued deserved a starting spot over Curry.
The All-Star reserves, selected by NBA head coaches, will be announced on January 30, with the draft taking place on February 6. The weekend’s festivities will also include the Rising Stars Challenge, Slam Dunk Contest, Three-Point Contest, and Celebrity Game, offering fans a full slate of basketball entertainment.
