Filming Begins for 'Supergirl; Woman of Tomorrow' with Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El
Filming has officially begun for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with DC Studios co-head James Gunn sharing the first behind-the-scenes look at Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. The photo, posted on social media, shows Alcock sitting in a chair on set at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK, with the Supergirl logo visible on the backrest. Gunn praised Alcock, calling her “every inch the unique Supergirl envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Nogueira,” the creative team behind the 2021 comic series that inspired the film.
Directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella, I, Tonya), the movie is based on Tom King’s acclaimed comic book series, which follows a darker, more hardcore version of Supergirl. Unlike her cousin Superman, who was raised on Earth by loving parents, Kara Zor-El grew up on a dying Krypton, witnessing the destruction of her home planet before arriving on Earth. This backstory shapes her into a more hardened and complex character, distinct from previous portrayals of Supergirl.
The film’s cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young girl seeking justice for her father’s murder, and Jason Momoa as the alien mercenary Lobo. David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham will play Supergirl’s Kryptonian parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze, respectively. Krypto the Superdog will also make an appearance.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026, and is part of Gunn and Peter Safran’s broader vision for the DC Universe. Rumors suggest Alcock’s Supergirl may debut earlier in Gunn’s Superman film, slated for release in July 2025. The movie promises a grittier, more nuanced take on the iconic character, exploring themes of loss, resilience, and justice.
