Governor Josh Stein Leads Recovery Efforts in Western North Carolina Post-Hurricane Helene
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein has been actively addressing the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which caused catastrophic damage in western North Carolina. Stein has prioritized recovery efforts, including repairing private roads and bridges, accelerating temporary housing options for displaced families, and pushing FEMA to extend hotel voucher assistance through May. He has also announced five executive orders aimed at bolstering recovery efforts in the region.
Stein recently welcomed President Donald Trump’s planned visit to the area, calling it “very good news” for the region still recovering from the hurricane. The governor expressed hope that the visit would highlight the ongoing needs of western North Carolina and bring federal attention to the recovery efforts. Stein’s administration has been working closely with FEMA, which has provided over $316 million in cash grants and $213 million in low-interest loans to survivors.
As winter storms sweep across the state, Stein has urged FEMA to extend temporary shelter assistance for residents impacted by Helene. The Transitional Sheltering Assistance program, which provides hotel or motel rooms for survivors, was set to end but has been extended due to the severe weather conditions. Stein emphasized the importance of ensuring that residents have safe and warm shelter during the winter months.
Stein’s administration continues to focus on long-term recovery, including housing, small business support, and infrastructure repair. The governor has also been vocal about the need for bipartisan cooperation to address the challenges facing the state, particularly in the wake of natural disasters.
